Dr. Vernon and Patricia Hermsen

Could you share why you decided to give back to the University of South Dakota?

I’ve always believed that if I were ever in a position to do so, I would give back to USD. The university has been so important to me throughout my life, and I feel strongly that it’s the right thing to do. When I was at USD, I experienced so much – opportunities, strong professors and a foundation that really set me up for success. Even though I gave to the Sanford School of Medicine for years with John Willcoxson through our professional fund, it became clear that I wanted to give additional backing to the College of Arts & Sciences. My time within that particular school was filled with such growth and support, and I feel it’s my turn to reciprocate that level of assistance.

Can you tell me more about your connection to the university and why it was important for you to give back?

USD has always been a central part of my life. I graduated from both the undergraduate and medical school programs, and it’s a place I hold in deep regard. I spent much of my career as a professor in Iowa, Missouri and Texas, and no matter where I went, I carried the values and respect I had for USD. It was at USD that I received the kind of education that really shaped who I am today, and that’s something I want to ensure future students can experience as well. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve also realized that it’s important for me to make a meaningful impact while I still can, especially because my health isn’t what it used to be.

How do you think your background played a role in your decision to give?

I grew up in a low-income farming family during the Second World War. We didn’t have much, and higher education seemed out of reach. But USD opened doors for me that wouldn’t have been available elsewhere. It made education accessible to someone like me, and that’s something I’ll never forget. That’s why I feel so strongly about giving back – it’s about ensuring that the next generation of students doesn’t have to face the same struggle I did. I always say that my “endowment to myself” was showing pigs at the fair to earn money for school, but in reality, USD’s support was the true turning point in my life.

With the creation of the Vernon and Patricia Hermsen Scholarship Endowment, what are your hopes for the future?

I hope that this gift helps make things a little easier for students. It feels good to know that our contribution will help provide opportunities for others – this scholarship is my way of giving back to a place that gave me so much.

Any advice for the younger generation of alumni?

Giving back is just the right thing to do. I’ve always been proud of USD and want to see it succeed. For those who may be in a position to give back, it’s an incredibly rewarding experience. Invest wisely and try to remember the positive role USD played in getting you to where you are today.
